"Some people care too much, I think it's called love."

Having a great week so far.

Brody is on feeds again. They are slowly introducing feeds so they don't stress out his insides. He is doing awesome on his vent settings. They were able to wean down the pressure support again yesterday. When he moves a lot, he desats but it is only into the 80s which is great. They will probably wean again on Wednesday or Friday. He has his head and kidney ultrasound on Thursday. I Hope he has no kidney stones and that his brain bleeds have completely vanished. Please pray for this.
Gracie had her swallow test today. We are waiting on the results. She also had her ROP follow up and it seems things are getting better so they will check her in two weeks. I hope they increase her feeds today so we can get her home soon.
Madi is sleeping in her crib- only during the day. She seems to love her room. Her machine was going off a lot last night. I'm not sure if it was really her or the machine acting crazy. Those machines are good to have but they aren't 100 % accurate. I know this to be true when I had my contraction monitor. Anyway, I hope to get her off some of these medications on Thursday.... wish us luck.

Today and this week

Today has been a good day.

Meme went to visit the babies today and held Gracie for the first time. This is actually the first time Gracie has been held by someone other than mom and dad :o) She is really great! Very alert and precious as ever. Tuesday is the swallow study. I'm ready to have the results so we can figure out the safest way to feed her, increase her feeds, and get her home!
Brody is doing much better. He is now 7 pounds 2 ounces. This weight isn't 100% accurate since he is still a little swollen. He is back on the vent settings he was on before surgery! This is HUGE! The biggest goals for him this week is: eating again (hope by Monday), weaning pressure support, move to crib. Although I hate the thought of him being so big he needs a crib, I have to put that aside and think of what is best for Brody. He is very big and has out grown his bed so he needs a crib. Also, they will have a mobile and other things to help development and he gets really hot in the bed he is in now.
Madi has been really fussy the past couple days. She is having some issues with her tummy. We have a Pedi appointment on Thursday so I hope to make her comfortable until then.
I'm adjusting to being home all day. Last week was really hard but it seems to be better daily. I'm looking at going back to school in January so I will spend the rest of the year getting the babies on schedule with appointments and home life, house organized, and life organized :o) My plan is to get my degree while I'm unable to work so when I am able to work I will have it out of the way.

Have a great week everyone!

"When babies look beyond you and giggle, maybe they're seeing angels"

Quoted in The Angels' Little Instruction Book by Eileen Elias Freeman, 1994

Friday, September 24, 2010

"People who say they sleep like a baby usually don't have one."

Isn't that the truth? Madi sleeps really well through the night but the slightest noise she makes sends me shooting up from bed to check on her. It would be funny but at this point its exhausting.

Brody's ROP is getting better and correcting itself. This was the official word from the doctor today. This is some weight lifted off our shoulders but there is still some level of uncertainty. He continues to recover from surgery. He requires full support when he is heavily sleeping. The blood gas they took today looked really well. His surgery sight is a little red so they are keeping an eye on that and marking it to see if it grows larger.
Gracie is doing great. They are keeping her at two bottles until they do the swallow study to make sure she remains safe during feedings. The swallow study is set for the 27th.
Maid went to the Pedi today, she has some congestion. The Pedi isn't worried about it and said to come back next week to see what our game plan will be for the next couple of weeks. Thank God we have insurance but we still have to pay our copay so I probably need to learn how to take care of these babies and stay out of the doctor's office ;o)

Ricky has to work this weekend so Madi and I will be hanging out. Can't wait until he does not have to work weekends anymore and really can't wait until Brody and Gracie are home with us!  The holidays are right around the corner... I might just lock us up in the house and have quality time the entire holiday season... Just kidding but on a serious note, Brody has to be home for the holidays....seriously!

Please keep praying. At times, I can't see the reason for things happening but luckily, we have a loving God and He continues to pull our babies through each hurdle. It is an awesome security to have GOD on our side!

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."

Brody made it through surgery this afternoon. He had his gut reconnected as well as his circumcision done. He is on full life support right now and will remain that way for the next 24-48 hours. He is now 6 pounds 4 ounces! He had a follow up eye exam for the ROP yesterday. It looks like his eyes are healing well from surgery but it is still to early to know for sure. The doctor will check again in 2 weeks. The important goals for Brody will be for him to start eating again, 5-7 days and for him to get off the vent and on CPAP. The hope is for him to be able to get back to where he was before surgery today on the vent settings. They will look at putting him in a pedi crib once he is stable and off so much support. He is now one of the bigger babies in NICU III.
The ENT came to check out Gracie yesterday. I was concerned because she has no voice since the last time she was intibated so I asked the Neonatologist to call in the ENT doctor. Turns out, one of her vocal cords is paralyzed. This is due to being intibated the last time. The vocal cords are so sensitive so when they intibate, if they hit the cord, it will damage it. They said that almost every case recovers within one year. The bad part is she is nonvocal. When she tries to cry or make noise, you only hear air. There is also a danger to this, she now has to be held a certain way when being fed so the food does not aspirate into her lungs. The other danger is that I will have to rely on the machines when she is home since she will not be able to cry to get my attention. They are ordering a swallow study on her to make sure she is 100% safe to bottle feed. I also talked more to the doctor about her kidneys. They are still enlarged but there is no urine refluxing back into the kidneys. The reason the kidneys are enlarged is because she had no fluid in the womb. They will continue her on antibiotics for this and hope that they decrease in size. They also worry a little about her creating kidney stones with the type of medications they have to give her. She had her ROP follow up and the doctor said he would check her in one week. Once she is on all 8 bottles, she will be ready to come home. She is currenlty on 2 per day. She weighs 4 pounds 15.5 ounces, just .5 away from 5 pounds!
Madi had her ROP follow up today. The doctor said she is now stage 1 which is great news. Since her eyes are improving, we don't have to go back for two weeks. She did great in the car and had no episodes with As and Bs.
Early Childhood Development will be out next week to work with Madi. They basically asses her and see what services she will need. All three will have a therapist once they are home. Gracie will need a speech therapist since her vocal cord is damaged.
It becomes more evident every day that this will be a long road for the babies but I'm very confident that by the time they are ready for school, they will be on track. I won't stop until it happens!

Trips...

Gracie may have UTI infection. They did spinal tap and bladder taps on Saturday. They put her on antibiotics for safe measure. Since all of that, her temp has been normal and she is acting fine. Since she has problems with her kidneys, UTIs will be very common until we can get the kidney problem corrected. They have stopped her bottle feeds until tomorrow.
Brody is doing ok. The doctor said it seemed he was tiring out since he is taking all the breaths on his own now. Won't know if there will be any changes until the blood gas tomorrow. Since he is having surgery on Wednesday, they may put him on full support tomorrow through his surgery. He is almost 6 pounds.
Madi continues to do good at home. We are trying to figure out the right amount of formula that isn't too much but enough.

I have a very busy week ahead. Ricky goes back to work tomorrow. I think the best way to figure traveling out is to just do it by myself. I will need to take my chill and patience pill :) Please keep praying for our little miracles. It is truly amazing to see where we were an where we are now. I'm so happy we are this far in because it was really tough in the beginning.

*I have pictures of Gracie and Brody but haven't had the time to load them... will try to do that this week. Aunt Pooh: call me when you can :o)

Pedi visit round 2

Madi went to visit the doctor again today. Her 11 am feed didn't do so well and she refluxed really bad. We actually almost called 911 twice. We finally were able to get her breathing again after suctioning her several times. On top of that, her temperature was very low. Conclusion: give her 40 mls instead of 60 for her feeds and also use gas drops. We know have to take her temperature every diaper change and report all of the reading to the doctor tomorrow morning.
Brody's reconnect will be next Wednesday! We are really excited for that and hope everything goes well. He is also doing well with his own breaths.
Gracie is doing great. Her bottle feed is tomorrow at 11 am. Ricky will be there for that so they can train him how to feed her. Once she is on full feeds she can come home. If she is anything like Madi, they could be in roughly 8 days!

Life with a baby home...

is amazing! Ricky and I took her to the pediatrician this morning. We really like him and the fact that his group is part of Texas Childrens and that his office is in Kingwood!! The plan is to keep things the same as the Neonatologist have it until she is closer to newborn age (she is 36 weeks and term is 40 weeks). Once we are there, he will work with a Pulmonologist and other specialists to wean her off the oxygen, apnea monitor, and medications. Until then, we are just fine with the way things are. Her weight is 5 pounds 3 ounces. She continues to be great with her schedule. Every 3 hours she eats but we have to start getting her ready about 30 minutes before her bottle. It takes her about 30 minutes to eat and burp then, we do it all again. She is getting more alert during her wake times. She is really great! Ricky is really awesome with her. The babies are very lucky to have him :)
Gracie went for her test today on her kidneys. The nurse said she did really well with it and we should have the results tomorrow. No matter what the result, her kidneys do work which is more than when I was pregnant with her so that is already good news. She is 4 lbs 8 oz. She will get her first bottle on Friday! The Neonatologist told the Pediatrician that they think Gracie will be home in 2-3 weeks. I'm really excited to get her home too!!
Brody had a great day today! They have weaned his breaths the machine was giving him all the way down to zero so he is taking all his own breaths. The machine is now providing pressure and keeping his airways open. I am very worried about his eyes. I hope everything is okay and they heal they way they need to for vision. Please pray for his vision. The doctor talked with the surgeon today on his reconnect. I will have the date tomorrow. I am ready for them to reconnect so they can force him off the vent and he can come home. They are talking about putting him in a crib. That makes me really sad because his first crib is suppose to be the one we bought him with his bedding and everything. Plus, when your in the NICU and you see those cribs, they are for chronic kids. You just don't want your little boy to be a chronic baby. The fact that he is 5 pounds 10 oz and very long makes it even harder because I feel like he is growing up in the hospital. I hate that for him. I know Gracie will be home soon so I don't feel like that with her but Brody is another story because we don't know when he can come home.
I had a light bulb moment while cleaning the million bottles we used today: The key to life with multiples is extreme organization and scheduling. I'm talking OCD total type A, take charge, just do it type system. Since I just had this bright idea, I'm now trying to get everything in order. I haven't figured out how to conquer doctor appointments since going with just Madi was really hard today. You have to carry her in her car seat, the oxygen and apnea monitor, plus the diaper bag. The stuff is really heavy! We get a handicap sticker since we have babies on oxygen but even parking close won't change all the "stuff" we have to carry.

Needed:
New house at least 5 bedrooms with a playroom and TV room... can someone please play the Lotto? This little house is packed full :o)

Welcome HOME baby girl

Madi, today you are 36 weeks gestation and you are enjoying your first night at home!

Finally the day has come. It is very bitter sweet having Madi home. I really wish that Brody and Gracie were here too but I know it won't be long. She did great on the way home. Ricky drove and I rode with her in the back. Ricky finally got up to 65 MPH on the freeway. We got home around 7 pm. We haven't done much tonight, I've given her meds, feed her, changed her, and have held her a lot. Actually, this is the only time I haven't held her and I'm sure once I'm done with the update she will be right back in my arms :o)
She has many doctor appointments. I have to make an appointment with the Pediatrician tomorrow and she has an appointment on Friday in the Med Center to follow up on the ROP. She has her apnea monitor on her at all times. It has a really loud alarm on it and will go off if she has an apnea or bradycardia (apnea is when she stops breathing and brady is when her heart rate drops). She has not had any As and Bs in a while but it is a precaution. She is also on continuous oxygen. This is a real bummer but since she failed her car seat test without oxygen, she has to have it at all times. We don't care.... she is HOME!!!!
Brody is now 5 pounds 7 oz. I didn't get to spend a lot of time with him today because Madi's discharge took up most of the day but he also had to get a transfusion. When he is being transfused, we can't hold him. Other than him being a little anemic, he is fine.
Gracie is doing great with her bolus feeds. She is very alert these days. Ricky and I were both able to hold her today. She did great and loved it! I think she will be home by mid October if not sooner.
Ricky is off work all this week. I'm very happy about that so we can get use to Madi being home. However, the TO DO list is very long and we both have a lot to get done this week. He has an Ortho appointment tomorrow. He and I are going to switch out visiting the NICU. I'm not sure that I will be able to go a day without seeing ALL my babies so we will figure it out.
Don't forget to see the visiting requirements and please make sure you follow them.

Thanks!

Krista

Life

I had the best moment with Brody today. This was the first time he has ever been held up right and he loved it. He snuggled up really close to me. He is such a big boy now. His length is as long as my torso. I can't wait for him to be home so we can snuggle everyday.

Madi should be home tomorrow but I'm not counting on it until she is home. She might have been baby C but she is a "its all about me" child. The nurse has to feed her before all the other babies or she cries the entire time. Ricky was holding Gracie and I was feeding Madi. After I was finished, I put Madi back to say hello to Gracie. Every time I walked over to Gracie, Madi would start crying. After about 3 times, I told her to get over it. She is too funny.

Gracie is doing great. They have her on bolus feeds now. They are trying to get her on bottle feeds this week.

A great friend I haven't seen in over 6 years gave me a TON of baby stuff today. She has two really cute twin girls so that means I have matching outfits for the girls :) I'm so excited for them to start wearing this stuff. We also got half of Toys R Us from her. Everything we didn't have we got and more! I was sorting all the clothes tonight and it hit me that we haven't really bought very many clothes and we have so many. It has been a real blessing all the things that have been given to us. These babies are so loved by so many people.

On another note, I resigned from my job last week. It was really weird and is still a weird feeling. It was necessary because there is no way I can work right now. The babies will have OT in and out of the house as well as many appointments but I've stepped out of my comfort zone in putting my career on hold.

We painted Brody's room and put his crib together this weekend. His room is going to be so darn cute when finished.

With everything that happened with Brody on Friday I forgot to update how our room in went with Madi. If you don't know, we stayed the night with Madi in a room at the hospital. She did really well. When they delivered her to our room, Ricky said, "I'm so freaked out"! It was really funny but he did well. Honestly, I was a little freaked out myself since we were just trained hours earlier on her apnea monitor. Anyway, we woke up every 2.5 hours to give her medication, change her diaper, and feed her. Well, I say we, anytime Madi made a noise I shot up out of bed. Not sure how that happened because I was exhausted and sound asleep. She was fine every time but I would wake up so fast it startled Ricky every time so he woke up too. By morning we were so exhausted. It was awesome having her with us. I held her a lot. Ricky changed a poop diaper. Well, he attempted but he kept saying he was going to throw up and "dang baby you stink really bad", so when she decided she was not going to stop pooping during the change and he kept his nose covered with his shirt, I decided to jump in their and finish the job. I did tell him to suck it up because we have three babies and he will be changing a poop diaper and I don't care if he throws up. Anyway, it was really funny. We have a lot to learn and many memories to make. I will post as I find time.

Have a great week!

Krista

Visiting at home

There have been changes added to the visiting requirements. Please read below and make note of the changes. Also, have you got your Flu shot? If you plan on visiting you need to get it and make sure you don't get sick before you visit. This means don't stop and get your shot and head to the house :) Oh and if you think I'm bad aka protective you should see Ricky :o)

WELCOME! We are happy you are here

In order to keep the babies healthy and out of the hospital, we must follow these strict guidelines:

No Children visitors

No visitors that are sick, not feeling well including allergies within 48 hours

No visitors if you have been around someone sick within the last 48 hours

No visitors that are not up to date on shots including Flu shot

Take your shoes off

Use sanitizer for hands and arms, rub in until dry

In order to hold you must have:

Clean clothes with no perfumes

Not smoked or been around a smoker in the clothes you are wearing

Although, we are excited for you to visit our babies, it will not hurt our feelings if you can’t visit until you can meet these guidelines. We would rather everyone be healthy and happy than take any chances. Since the babies are preemie, the slightest illness can put them back in the hospital.

Thank you for understanding.

I got two 5 pounders.... their names are Brody and Madi. Gracie is not to be left out at a hearty 4 lbs 5 oz. Grow Babies Grow!

What is the point?

There is NO reason for this crap! I don't need to learn something from this or become a better person because of this. NOPE, if you need me to learn a leason then do this crap to ME!

Brody now has ROP. If you don't know what ROP is then Google it. He had emergency surgery Friday. We will not know what his vision will be for up to 6 weeks. Hasen't he been through enough? I think he has.
Madi is not home. I don't even care about that at this point. She may be home on Monday but who knows. She also is developing ROP but it isn't critical right now.
Gracie is doing great. However, she is also developing ROP but is not critical.

I'm tired of my kids going through this horrible stuff. There is no reason for it and if there is a reason it isn't worth their suffering to prove a point. Where is the GRACE and MERCY?

Brody,

I don't understand why you have to go through this stuff. I am sorry this is happening to you. I want you to know that during all of this, I love you so much; to the moon and back! You are such a brave little boy. I would never be strong enough to go through what you have gone through. You are still the sweetest baby despite the tubes, surgeries, needles, IVs, invasive eye procedures, the list goes on. You are amazing to me. You deserve much better than this. I don't understand why you are not getting dealt a better hand but I promise this: I will spend my entire life making this up to you. I'm so very sorry and I love you with all that I am. Keep fighting little boy. Your sisters need you and I need you. I will break every rule and make every person burning mad to get you what you need and deserve. If your sisters and your mom and dad need to be cheering at your bedside everyday, I will make it happen. Whatever you need, I will make happen. This is not just now but your entire life. Your daddy loves you so very much too.  You moved your head to me when I gave you a kiss on the cheek today... I wanted to just pick you up and hold you and never let go but I couldn't, you were going off to surgery. I know you know who I am and I know you know how much I love you. Keep being brave and strong and I will figure out the rest.

I love you,

Mommy

Flu shot at Walgreens

Ok, so you are already getting a Flu shot so you can meet the babies right??? Well please go to Walgreens and get your shot. If you don't have insurance it is $29. You get a $5 coupon with or without insurance. Please use the coupon to purchase this formula : Enfamil EnfaCare Lipil for babies born prematurely 22 Calorie. The picture above is what it looks like. It should cost you about $10. Thanks!
If you would like to help when Madi comes home, please email me when you are available. Also, let me know if you would like to be CPR certified.

Krista
pattonfamily3@gmail.com

*If you have the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) through your employer, the Flu shot qualifies.

the girls are roommates!

The girls are together! Gracie is in the bed to the left and Madi is in the "bucket" to the right. They can look at each other :) Gracie passed Brody on the way out of NICU III. It made me really sad to leave him behind. I want nothing more than for him to catch up.
The babies will have their first set of shots tonight. I'm happy this is at the hospital in case they run a fever or something. Madi will have her sleep study today. She passed her hearing test. I'm keeping the paper that shows she can hear for when she is older and acts like she can't hear. She also had her test to see if she was on target for her age and to my surprise she is right on track. Usually preemies are behind so this is great news.
If you have not got your flu shot yet, I asked about the nasal spray vaccine and you can do that instead of the actual shot since it is giving you the same medicine.
Thanks for all the cards, phone calls, and emails wishing me a happy birthday. This is the best birthday yet and I can't wait to see what this next year brings.

"Babies are bits of stardust, blown from the hand of God."

We have MAJOR stress going on here.... Ricky is trying to get the Suburban fixed (don't ask) and we also have to get Brody's room and the hall painted before Madi comes home. I've got the first coat of primer on now but it looks like it will take a couple of coats.

The babies have no stress and that is a great thing...

Madi is doing great in her "bucket" aka open crib. She is now 4 lbs 13 oz and looking like a regular size baby, if that makes sense. She is now on "eat as much as you want" feeds and eats a lot. Tomorrow she is doing her sleep study. This will determine if she needs oxygen during feeds and I also believe it will see if she needs the apnea monitor. Oh and I almost forgot but I got thrown up on for the first time tonight... it was really great and funny :)
Brody is doing good. They may make vent changes tomorrow.
Gracie is such a sweetie. She is doing amazing! She will be in level II within 4 days. They don't want to rush her upstairs which is fine by me.
Thursday all three have their eye exam for ROP. I think they will be fine but I'm always very worried until I have the results.
I will try to update the blog daily but I can't promise it will happen since I have a list of things to do before Madi is home.
Please keep praying for us. I really appreciate it.

Update on Madi

Madi will be home as early as Friday but by Monday for sure... I'm getting nervous :)

Meet Gracie

We have had so many great things happen this weekend. Yesterday, Gracie's primary nurse had this photo waiting on me. I just started crying as did her other primary nurse. This is the very first time I've seen her entire face. She is such a doll. Gracie is now on nasal cannula! She is doing really great with it. They have already weaned her down to 1/8 of a liter which is the lowest amount of oxygen. It looks like she will be making her way to level II this week. She is such a happy baby now. I have met her all over again. I can't wait for her to come home.
Brody is doing good. They have changed him to the bigger vent and it supports him much better. He is such a long little boy. Very long and thin. All of his weekly blood tests were good as well as his x ray. I keep reminding myself that slow and steady wins his race.
Madilynn is ready to come home. It will probably be early next week when she does come home. She no longer has oxygen or a feeding tube since she is on full bottles. She has now decided that she needs to cry anytime she moves. I guess this means she is really ready to come home. We have some tests that she will need to pass before she is released. We are waiting on her temperature to stabilize before these tests can be done.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart;" Jeremiah 1:5

The plan for Mr. Brody is to now stay on the vent until after his surgery. They will be switching him to a bigger vent tomorrow since he is now almost 5 pounds. He was really exhausted today even sleeping through diaper changes, clothing changes, and his ostomy bag change.
Gracie is doing very well. They have lowered her C Pap setting again today to 8, 6 is the lowest it goes.
Madi is doing very well with feeds. She is closer to coming home every day.

“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

What a day! Brody was extubated this afternoon and put on Hudson C Pap. He did really great with it. I got a call around 7 pm that he had to be intubated again. He got too tired to breath. This may sound crazy to some but his lungs are really sick still so it is a huge task for him to breath. I will meet with the doctor in the morning to find out what our next step is. I got to see my baby's face without tape for the first time.
Gracie's C Pap was lowered from 12 to 10. She is doing really well.
Madi is now at 5 bottles a day. They are starting to get test done in order for her to come home. Ricky and I are taking CPR tomorrow night. She may be home as early as next week. One thing I've learned is don't count on anything and be flexible.
Ricky is still sick. I hope he is better tomorrow so he can see the babies. He is missing them very much.

9 weeks old!

Sorry no pictures yet. Ricky is really sick tonight so he is staying away from the hospital and I was there until around 4 so I decided to get some things done around the house tonight.

They did some blood work and x ray on Brody this morning to see if he was ready to be extubated. His caffeine level was low so they postponed taking him off the vent until tomorrow. They loaded him up with a big caffeine dose and will see if it is high enough in the morning. He started holding his breath today. This new "trick" is not cool. We are not sure why he is doing this. We thought the tube was gaging him but we aren't sure. When they try to take him off the vent tomorrow, he will still have the tube in his throat until he proves that he will breath on his own. This is way better than what they did last weekend (they removed the tube and had to use the bag to breath for him until they could get the tube back in). If he does well than he will be on Hudson C Pap. I HOPE THIS WORKS!! We really need him off the vent for so many reasons.
Gracie has been a wild child all day. The doctor stopped me in the hall to tell me that she has been in one of her moods today :) I love it!! Our primary nurse told me she had been moving all around and flinging her arms and legs around. When I got to her bed, she was passed out with her mouth open and arms spread wide open. She wore herself out. They are going to lower her C Pap setting from 12 to 10 tomorrow if she is still doing so well. Occupational Therapy came to work with her today and she did really well with that. That means she hated it but didn't require more oxygen. She is such a princess.
Madi is rockin and rollin. Now up to 4 bottles a day! That might not seem like a big deal to yall but it is. For one, the doctor is very impressed as well as all the nurses. The other thing is she is drinking all her bottle in no more than 9 minutes including burps. This is AWESOME for a baby being born so early and being so young still. Knock on wood, she has not had any As and Bs since August 25th. I hope those are gone for good. I hope Madi continues to do so well with bottles and the doctor can increase her a bottle a day so she can come home soon.
Please keep praying for our babies. I feel like we are out of the woods in a lot of ways but still have a lot of hurdles to over come.

Gracie's big day!

Gracie is a big girl now and wears clothes! She also is in the Claeo bed like Madi. She is doing very well. She passed her Echocardiogram!
Brody is doing good too. Fingers crossed, they will attempt to take him off the vent tomorrow. He also passed his Echocardiogram!
Madi is now up to 3 bottles a day and doing wonderful with it.
